May 20--Turn up the heat! That's what Wisconsin farmers want as they push through planting season.
Across the state, corn planting is 80 percent complete -- compared with 36 percent a year ago and a five-year average of 53 percent.
But recent cool weather, with a low temperature of 26 degrees last Friday in Janesville, has put a chill on plants emerging from the ground.
"We need some warm weather to move things along," says Randy Thompson, Rock County Extension agent.
Corn growth has been hindered by winter-like weather in most counties, according to Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics Service.
