In the last issue of APOLLO, I discussed Seaton Delaval, that strange and romantic pile by Sir John Vanbrugh in Northumberland, mentioning the recent discovery that the 'missing' years of the architect's earlier career had been spent in the service of the East India Company in Surat--that is, in India. Almost as extraordinary is the fact that a replica of Seaton Delaval was actually built, a century on, in India. This, called Dilkusha Kothi, was in Lucknow, the capital of the kingdom of Awadh, or Oudh.
