Is woman a "helper" suitable for man or a "companion to bear him company?" Does woman "yearn for" her partner, or does she "resist" his proper authority? These are some of the more convoluted puzzles which haunt the translators of the biblical text. Man may be at God's disposal, but woman is at the beck and call of the translator.
Our understanding of the Bible is transmitted to us by a powerful network of family and community relationships. It is imbued with values and applications which shape our identity and behaviour.
