Plant City, Florida, is an attractive southern town of 25,000 residents located half an hour east of Tampa. The municipality's first wastewater treatment facility was built shortly after World War II, and, over the next 50 years, several upgrades were made to it, including the construction of a water hyacinth pond. The facility's overall capacity was increased to 4 mgd in 1970 and doubled in 1976 to 8 mgd. At present, daily flows run approximately 4.5 mgd. The engineering firm of Smith and Gillespie has been handling Plant City's wastewater needs for nearly half a century.
