The University of Oregon dance department celebrated 50 years of dance before a full house Friday at Dougherty Dance Theatre. This annual showcase of faculty works began in 1959 by Dr. M. Frances Dougherty, the first head of the dance department.

"Dr. D" would have been pleased with the innovative works presented Friday.

Alexandrous Ballard choreographed the first piece, "Girl II," to music by Bach and Nico Muhly. Ballard has danced with New York Theatre Ballet, Richmond Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theatre among others. After retiring from performance, he studied Alexander technique and ...
