Upbeat about demand for fuel-efficient cars, Shigeo Ishida, president of Japanese supplier Jatco Ltd., expects higher sales of continuously variable transmissions next year despite the market meltdown.
He also sees a 6 percent increase in fuel economy from the transmissions, called CVTs, as further bolstering business.
Ishida expects Jatco's CVT sales to climb 3.1 percent to 1.7 million units in the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, and to increase again next year.
He declined to give a target. But the Jatco chief backed off on an earlier goal of annual sales of 2 million CVT units by 2011.
