Among the most closely guarded secrets in modern society are the humanity, beauty, and lovable nature and the awesome biological complexity of the unborn child. Terms such as 'embryo' and 'fetus' certainly have a place in discussion among scientists and physicians but their use in ordinary discourse tends to reduce the status of the unborn in the eyes of the public to that of a cipher or an abstraction. I shall not use these terms in that way here.
