New research insights concerning genetic mutations associated with atopic dermatitis are improving our understanding of cutaneous barrier dysfunction and fueling new approaches to therapy in the pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis. Recent scientific investigations have identified filaggrin mutations as one predisposing risk factor for patients with atopic dermatitis, and suggest that there are other genetic mutations that are risk factors for atopic dermatitis, as well, and others that are not.
