The Russia-Ukraine spat over the price of gas in January caused considerable hardship for many European chemical and pharmaceutical companies, with some even having to shut their doors. This dispute has left large users of gas, like the chemical industry, asking the question how, and indeed if, they can reduce their vulnerability to disruption of such a vital raw material.
Gazprom's decision last month to halt supplies to Ukraine until it agreed to pay substantially more to the Russian state-controlled utility for its gas had major ramifications far beyond the borders of the two countries.
