Children's allergic reaction to cockroaches is a major cause of the high level of asthma in inner-city youths, a recent study concluded.
Children are at high risk of asthma attacks if they are allergic to roaches and their homes show high levels of the insects' body parts and droppings, the study found.
The attacks result in uncommonly high rates of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, periods of breathing difficulty, missed school days and sleep-deprived nights, the study, conducted at eight medical centers in seven cities, said.
