The valley of the Couze, a tributary of the Dordogne, has received the attention of Palaeolithic archaeologists for over a century. Combe-Capelle Bas is one of four locales at Combe-Capelle, each of which has received varying attention over the last hundred years. The new excavations at Combe-Capelle Bas are one of a number where American archaeologists have been involved in re-excavating old sites, and Dibble and Lenoir are to be congratulated for addressing the problems and ambiguities of the original excavations, and for bringing an important site to the forefront of Middle Palaeolithic research.
