A new exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum gives visitors a rare glimpse into the socialite's travels through Asia in 1883 and 1884 - traced through scrapbooks, an assortment of colorful curios, Japanese screens and a large bronze Buddha from China.

"Asia was for Gardner, I think, a touchstone," said curator Alan Chong. "What we hope to reveal is her personality, her interests and her moving descriptions of how people experienced religion."

The "Journeys East" exhibition displays objects once housed in Gardner's "Chinese Room" - a ground-floor gallery modeled after the Buddhist temples she saw on her journeys ...
