The firm of Cartier was founded as a retail establishment in Paris in 1847, and by 1910 it had opened branches in London and New York City to better serve a clientele that ranged from Indian maharajahs and European nobility to American captains of industry and Hollywood celebrities. By the 1920s it had become one of the preeminent designers and manufacturers of jewelry in the world. An exhibition documenting the insatiable appetite of the rich for Cartier jewelry opens on April 2 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where it remains on view until August 3.
