COLUMBUS, Ga. _ About the only thing cars and cotton gins have in common is metal.
But Donald Van Doorn talks about cotton gins like a teen describing his first car.
``I've always been fascinated with the appearance of machines and their function, just like cars,'' said Van Doorn, 75.
In the 50 years Van Doorn has worked for Lummus Corp., an international manufacturer of cotton gins in Columbus, he has registered more than 50 patents and is considered the world's foremost expert on cotton gins.
