Baja California is still one of Mexico's most sparsely settled areas. Its narrow peninsula runs some 760 miles from the border town of Tiajuana to the southern-most point at Cabo San Lucas. The ribbon width extends from 30 miles to 150 miles and a range of mountains cuts the state from top to bottom.
Up to now, because of its remote and undeveloped quality it has sleepily fascinated independent travelers. But, that era is now in the past. First setting the wheels in motion for the U.S. invasion was the Transpeninsula Highway, built in 1973, and the pioneer drivers gave Baja the first insight to become a great coastal resort.
