WORCESTER- The Massachusetts Spy, Worcester's leading weekly newspaper of the day, said it was thought to be "the most extraordinary crime ever perpetrated in New England."
Four people, including the victim's 32-year-old pregnant wife, would be sentenced to death by hanging for the March 1, 1778, murder of Joshua Spooner, whose body was dumped in a well after he was beaten to death outside his Brookfield home.
The trial of Bathsheba Spooner and her three co-conspirators will be reenacted June 4 at the Worcester Trial Court, 225 Main St., as part of the local celebration of the Massachusetts Superior Court's 150th ...
