When Dada was young, metal bottle racks and porcelain urinals were state-of-the-art nondescript, as unremarkable as the paper cups in one of Jack Risley's sculptures. It seems that part of the point of Risley's new work, cleverly assembled from industrial-grade commercial goods, is to formulate material equations of perfect neutrality--no loose emotions, no surplus value.
He winds up employing lots of empty containers, all of them visibly unused, so no possible trace of content past or present can accrue.
