EPA: cooperation vs. confrontation. (Legislative Issues)(Column)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of the most maligned agencies in Washington, D.C. Various businesses, including a number in the ceramic industry, often complain about uneven enforcement, unrealistic standards and a tendency to emphasize petty matters. Environmental groups chastise the EPA for not being tough enough, for being slow to develop standards and for having misplaced priorities.

All of these observations are true to one degree or another. The EPA's mission is vast. Its major activities relate to environmental problems associated with air, water, solid waste and toxic substances. This means what everyone breathes, drinks, throws away and uses.
