WASHINGTON _ Twenty-five years ago, at 2:30 a.m. on June 17, 1972, five men loaded with electronic surveillance gear were arrested and charged with breaking into Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington.
Thus was ``Watergate'' born.
At first, then-President Nixon's press secretary dismissed the affair as ``a third-rate burglary attempt.'' But it soon mushroomed into the biggest political scandal in American history, forcing Nixon to become the first president ever to resign.
