New devices replace discrete designs in high power motor drive and motion control applications.
Motor drive and motion control designers often require PWM (pulse width modulation) amplifiers to achieve reasonable power efficiency in their designs. In the past these amplifiers were discrete designs or potted modules. But now PWM amplifiers have taken the same course of development traveled by op amps and many other electronic functions. Concepts brought to life using discrete components were followed by modules then hybrids. This article will explain how PWM amplifiers work, show the advantages of this technology, and explain how to use them effectively.
