THE City of Cape Town has bucked the global environmental trend to limit golf courses by calling for the construction of more facilities in areas such as Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.
The news emerged at a planning and environment portfolio committee meeting where a R200 000 report on the economic impact of the city's golf industry was slammed for being "inaccurate and flawed".
Golf courses use millions of litres of water each month, and the Western Cape is regarded as a water-scarce region.
Democratic Alliance councillor Owen Kinahan said golf courses should be run as businesses that generated profit.
