Three inventors in the UK have proposed using auxetic materials in the support regions of garments such as brassieres, especially those used for sports.
In International Patent Publication WO 2008/016689, Andy and Kim Alderson, and Martin Bentham say that the unusual properties of auxetics, materials that exhibit a negative Poisson' ratio and so become fatter when stretched (and thinner when compressed), can be exploited to provide better support for intimate apparel, particularly sports bras.
