The prevailing image of innovation used to be new or improved products. Flat screen TV sets for example, or high capacity full-colour copiers.

Innovation has long been just another word for technical progress. Innovation was something that men wearing white coats did in laboratories. Not anymore. In the sixties and seventies the big innovators no longer worked in huge laboratories but in their garages at home in California.
