Article: Kia Announces Voluntary Recall For Engine Control Module

IRVINE, Calif., June 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Kia today announced a voluntary recall of selected 1997 Sportage sport-utility vehicles for the replacement of the engine control module.

Kia has found that on 6,829 Sportages manufactured between Aug. 29, 1996, and Feb. 18, 1997, the engine control module may have an electronic software error that may affect the monitoring function of the evaporative emissions system. A malfunctioning engine control module would not cause the "check engine" light to illuminate if a problem were to occur in the evaporative emissions system.
