Recent national and state reviews into school curricula and pedagogy have detailed a number of concerns and recommendations in relation to language and literacy teaching (Collins, 1999; Ramsay, 2004; DEST, 2005). Among the general concerns about children's performance as measured by national literacy benchmarks, the reviews have indicated a need to increase teachers' 'knowledge about language' (henceforth KAL) and literacy.
