Jun. 18--Erin Ellis had never heard of bagels before Bagels & Blenderz opened two years ago. The 17-year-old senior at Centennial High School wasn't sure where they came from either. Not that she cared. Ellis just likes the taste.
Bagels have become a culinary favorite throughout the nation, and Bakersfield has been swept along in the trend.
Bagel sales nationwide gross about $2.6 billion. That is more than doughnut sales, which gross about $1.8 billion, according to Patrick Kearns, associate editor of Modern Baking, a trade magazine.
