The European Commission definitively adopted, on 6 March, a regulation making it compulsory to label the origin of virgin and extra virgin olive oil. This measure, which aims to prevent consumers from being misled, will enter into force on 1 July. "Different agricultural traditions and varied extraction and blending practices mean that the taste of olive oils from different countries can be very distinct," said the agriculture commissioner, explaining this decision. According to Mariann Fischer Boel, for this reason, and in line with the traceability rules in EU food law, the time is right to introduce compulsory origin labelling.
