CHESAPEAKE, Va. _ Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the explorer and conservationist world-famous for his French accent and trademark red cap, was best known to Americans for his television shows about life under the sea.
But friends and colleagues at the Cousteau Society headquarters in Chesapeake, who refer to him as ``The Captain,'' say Cousteau's legacy is environmental stewardship.
Cousteau, who died Wednesday at age 87 in Paris, would not have wanted his work to die with him, said Bob Steele, who worked with the explorer for 15 years as the society's vice president for finance.
