PHILADELPHIA _ As she lay near first base, crippled by a torn ligament in her left knee, Kristen Luciano panicked. ``I knew this could be it,'' she said. ``I knew it all might be over.''
The injury, which happened in late April when Luciano stepped awkwardly on the base, did end her career with the St. Joseph's University softball team _ one hit short of the school record.
Whether it also will jeopardize her ambition to become a police officer is uncertain. Luciano, who graduated earlier this month with a degree in criminal justice, said she never could make it through the police academy on a bum leg.
