The supply of bananas to UK supermarkets is in jeopardy as simmering supplier discontent over supermarket pricing threatens to boil over.
Although the average price of bananas has jumped 34% to 94p/kg in the past year as a result of higher production costs, importers insist they are still not making sustainable returns.
"Low prices are being passed down the supply chain to workers who do not receive a living wage," claims Jacqui Mackay, national co-ordinator of Banana Link, an international body that campaigns for the rights of the banana trade.
