THE AURORA BOREALIS, OR northern lights, is one of the most spectacular phenomena to grace our night skies, producing spectacular coloured curtains of electric light that appear to shimmer and shake in the freezing air. It isn't a rare event--in fact that it occurs frequently during the winter in the relatively unpolluted skies of the Arctic. Sightings are common--sometimes occurring further south if conditions are right--and photography is a relatively straightforward task, providing you don't forget key items of equipment such as a tripod and remote release.
