EXTON, Pa. -- With the credit market freeze, consumer recession and protracted slump in new residential construction as a backdrop, the $305 billion North American building products distribution industry is clearly undergoing dramatic changes. Building products distribution is an indispensable part of the homebuilding and R&R supply chain and although highly fragmented, it's a big business that tops the list of most fragmented industries in the U.S. economy, based on the Herfindahl-Hirschman index, a measurement used by regulators to measure the level of industry competition for anti-trust purposes.
