Mar 12, 2009 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- BHP Billiton has negotiated a new supply of nickel from Australian-listed Western Areas. The low nickel price has reduced its supply from third parties. The deal has raised speculation about BHP's long-term plans for its Western Australian nickel division. It could signify increased commitment to the nickel business, although BHP could be just maintaining output or it could be improving the business for sale.
