I consider art making to be an act of resistance. In my work, I examine the awareness that occurs when we recognize our places in the world as part of larger social patterns and put alternative perspectives into dialogue. My paintings thus explore the intersection of cultural expectations and individual identity. The world needs the socially aware critical thinking of people engaged in creative processes: we cannot have what we cannot imagine. However, an art piece records a destination rather than the journey the artist took to get there. By sharing my journey as an artist, I hope to encourage others to choose creative paths that bring their critical voices into the world.
