Jun. 30--Executives at Barnes & Noble booksellers were not laughing last week about the most recent edition of New Yorker magazine, which featured a cartoon of two grim mobsters in double-breasted suits standing in a bookstore.
A nervous looking cashier shouts to her boss in the caption, "Emily, a Mr. Barnes and a Mr. Noble would like a word with you."
Presumably, the aim of the cartoon, on page 115, was to make light of Barnes & Noble's growing dominance in New York's retail book world, which last week learned of the demise of two more Manhattan bookstores.
