Robert Mitchum, the laconic leading man whose six decades' worth of detectives, drifters, cowboys and GIs defined a rebellious brand of American hero _ and anti-hero _ died Tuesday morning at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was 79 and suffering from both lung cancer, diagnosed in the spring, and emphysema.

The barrel-chested actor with the drowsy, hooded eyes was a drinker and smoker nearly to the end _ ``He smoked a pack of Pall Malls and had quite a few double martinis,'' recalled director Jim Jarmusch about a lunch with Mr. Mitchum two years ago _ and delivered some of his most memorable lines with a cigarette dangling from his lips.
