The celebrated landscape paintings of artist Alex Katz chronicle his longtime love affair with Maine--and a certain 19th-century shingled cottage set deep in the down East woods.
Alex Katz stands, on a brilliant summer day, in front of the yellow foursquare house instantly recognizable from many of his paintings."This is it," the artist says, forty-odd years of profound affection summed up in the economical statement. He gestures with a squash player's sinewy arms toward the Maine woods, marshes, fields and sky around him."I like being here," his succinct explanation goes,"because everywhere you look is, what do you call it . . . beautiful."
