Few 200 year old publications in biology can be read today with interest and profit. An exception is Christian Konrad Sprengel's Das entdeckte Geheimnifs der Natur im Bau und in der Befruchtung der Blumen (The secret of nature in the form and fertilization of flowers discovered). The 200 year anniversary of its publication was the stimulus for the Sprengel Bicentenary Symposium on Floral Biology held in 1993 at the XVth International Botanical Congress in Yokohama, Japan.
