Jul. 1--UAW WITHDRAWS: The UAW has dropped a membership campaign at Haworth Inc., leaving the office-furniture industry in western Michigan virtually free of unions.
The union-organizing committee disclosed the end of the five-month campaign in a letter to approximately 2,500 workers last week.
To hold a union election, at least 30 percent of workers must sign cards. Although the UAW would prefer a much higher show of support, organizer Diana Ketola said about half the Haworth work force wanted a union. The company dismisses that figure.
