It is unpleasant to reply to an article as offensive in tone and irresponsible in content as James Boros's "A 'New Totality'?,"(1) which denounces the "New Tonality" issue of Contemporary Music Review.2 He consistently distorts the views of the authors he is writing about. His association of the CMR authors with Italian Fascism (Boros, 547) is inexcusable. He does not present a coherent argument. Yet if I did not reply, silence might be taken for acquiescence. I restrict myself to responding in my roles as USA Regional Editor of CMR and as the author of an article that he attacks. I begin with my role as editor.
