TACOMA -- Someone had to settle things down in Thursday night's Class 3A girls' state quarterfinal game. So, Holy Names Academy's Erika Johnson decided she would.
In a game that tipped off at 9:07 p.m., referees called eight fouls before the Cougars and White River had combined for eight points. There were seven traveling calls, an over-and-back and sheer madness - all before the first period expired.
"That's kind of how we practice, all helter-skelter. That's a pace we're OK with, but (White River) slowed us down a little and we had a lot of turnovers," Holy Names coach Lee Adams said.
