WIMBLEDON, England _ Boris Becker first shocked the tennis world by becaming Wimbledon's youngest men's single champion at the age of 17 years and seven months in 1985.
Now, five months shy of turning 30, Becker shocked the tennis world for possibly the final time on Thursday at Centre Court. After dropping a quarterfinal match to top-seeded Pete, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4, he announced he had just played his last match at Wimbledon.
After being closed out by Sampras _ in what Becker believed was his last shot at winning the tournament dearest to his heart _ he effectively ended one of the most exciting careers of the Open Era.
