Malcolm MacDonald probably did more than any other man to promote the transition from Empire to Commonwealth, whether as High Commissioner to Canada, Governor General of East Asia, Governor of Kenya and as both Colonial and Dominion Secretary, apart from unofficial interest in VSO and other NGOs. Four hundred pages seem none too many for the story of this extraordinary man.
