Thomas A. Dorsey, father of gospel music, was born on this day in Villa Rica, GA. An accomplished pianist, Dorsey, in 1921 at the National Baptist Convention in Chicago, dedicated his musical talents to God and became a gospel songwriter and singer. Dorsey's unique blending of the secular rhythms of blues with religious hymns became "gospel" music.
