NEW YORK -- While the downturn in the nation's economy has not had as great an impact on hair care sales as it has on other consumer packaged goods, the country's economic woes have certainly been felt by retailers and suppliers across the United states.

In many instances, shoppers are trading down, seeking out lower-price brands and items that deliver more value in other ways.

Industry forecasters and analysts say that consumers' efforts to save money on hair care are indicative of a broad-based movement toward frugality.

Shoppers, they note, are more likely than ever to go from store to store to get the best price.
