The heart transplant center at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) is transplanting two donor hearts per day. Unique in their program is taking donor hearts from deceased older people and transplanting those hearts in senior citizens who can't live out their years without a transplanted heart. These senior citizens who may have life expectancies of 10-15 years do not require hearts from 20-year-old accident victims. Potential donors of older hearts need to know that their hearts may be completely acceptable for other seniors in need of a heart transplant, possibly even more suitable to older immune systems.
