I have discussed pigment flocculation and considered defects affected by flocculation or poor pigment dispersion in these pages in the past, but this month decided to take a closer look at pigment dispersion and how it influences the occurrence and prevention of surface defects. I am doing this partly because I believe that too many people in the coatings industry take dispersion for granted and do not do enough to optimize the process. I also am concerned that there is not enough realization that the movement to high solids has made it more difficult to let down pigment pastes without hurting dispersion stability.
