I have assigned Russ McDonald's The Bedford Companion to Shakespeare: An Introduction with Documents in a Shakespeare course for first-year honors students beginning in eight days. This is an endorsement. Of course, teaching being unpredictable, I'll know better in May than I do now whether McDonald's is a boon or a froward Companion. McDonald offers clearly written and judicious chapters (on biography, stage, bibliography, sources, genres, language, town and country life, gender and family, politics and religion) and accompanies each with an excellent selection of illustrations and documents which often rivals his text in length.
