MELBOURNE, March 19 Asia Pulse - As economic conditions begin to mirror the 1930s, fashion could be heading in the same direction.

Social demographer Bernard Salt says tough economic times mean people shy away from individualism and instead turn to conformity in fashion, a trend which followed the end of the roaring 1920s into the depressed 1930s.

As the global financial crisis takes hold in 2009, new, experimental designers can expect to struggle while "value" big-name brands are more likely to prosper.

Speaking during the Melbourne Fashion Festival, Australia's largest consumer-based event, Mr Salt says fashion shifts with economic status.
