INTRODUCTION

Glucose is a very important energy source for mammals. Sodium dependent glucose transporter-1 (SGLT-1) is a carrier protein encoded by the solute carrier family 5 member 1 (SLC5A1) gene. SGLT-1 is a high affinity transporter for glucose uptake in the gastrointestinal tract of many species (Ferraris 2001; Drozdowski and Thomson, 2006). It has been reported that SGLT-1 gene expression was regulated by the type and concentration of the carbohydrate-diet in the gastro-intestinal tract of rat and mouse (Ferraris and Diamond, 1992; Miyamoto et al., 1993; Kishi et al., 1999).
